    About This Role

An experienced Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon is required to join a large, well-established independent practice with hospital and branch sites across Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire.

This is a permanent position working 4 days per week (8:00am–6:30pm), with alternative working patterns considered. The role is primarily hospital-based, with some sole-charge work at local branches. The rota offers a fair and balanced mix of consults, surgery, hospital work and ambulatory shifts, all supported by extensive nursing, reception and coordination teams.

Consultations are 15 minutes, with additional time built in for complex cases and administration. Rotas are designed to be realistic and sustainable, and at the end of each shift cases are handed over to a dedicated in-house night team who manage inpatients and emergencies overnight. Out-of-hours commitments are currently 1:10 full weekends (day shifts only), with occasional Saturday morning consults. Time off in lieu is provided, including a Monday morning off following a full weekend and a full day off after occasional night shifts.

The practice follows established clinical protocols to support best practice, while actively encouraging clinical freedom. Veterinary surgeons are trusted to develop and deliver their own clinical plans within a progressive, open-minded team that prides itself on providing a high standard of care. With a large and loyal client base, the caseload is varied and rewarding, allowing continued development of both medical and surgical skills.

Professional development is strongly supported, with mentoring available from experienced colleagues and a structured career pathway designed to recognise individual interests and long-term career aspirations. The clinical team includes 19 small animal vets, supported by a highly skilled nursing team of registered nurses, students and assistants, as well as a fully staffed in-house laboratory, pharmacy and dispensary.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of three years’ experience in a similar small animal role and will be a genuine team player with a collaborative, can-do approach. They will take pride in their clinical work, enjoy being part of a busy practice, and value both the pace of a productive day and the opportunity to share cases and learning with colleagues. A full UK driving licence and own transport are required due to the rural setting, along with an appreciation of country life.

In return, the role offers a competitive salary of £38,000–£60,000 DOE, 7 weeks’ holiday increasing with service, funded RCVS membership and VDS cover, private medical insurance, a comprehensive wellbeing programme, generous staff discounts and an active social calendar. CPD is supported with 1 week and £1,500 per year, alongside additional funding and encouragement for Certificates. The role also includes access to XL Vet resources and initiatives, as part of a wider independent veterinary community.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a respected, independent practice offering strong leadership, a supportive culture and a genuine commitment to high clinical standards and long-term career development.
