This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Emergency and Critical Care Veterinary Surgeon to join a supportive 24-hour hospital team, working alongside experienced vets and nurses on a genuinely interesting and complex caseload.
With 7 nights on followed by 14 nights off, this role offers an unusual combination of challenging clinical work and substantial time away from the practice — giving you the freedom to enjoy your days off or even undertake additional locum work if you wish.
You’ll be supported by an experienced clinical team, with access to certificate holders in surgery, medicine, endosurgery and dentistry, as well as a proactive in-house clinical development programme.
The role
7 nights on / 14 nights off
12-hour shifts
Dedicated OOH role
£55,000–£60,000, depending on experience
Half-hour OOH consultations as standard
Complex medical and surgical caseload
Strong clinical support available

You’ll need solid medical and surgical skills and previous ECC experience is essential.
You’ll be a proactive Veterinary Surgeon who enjoys working as part of a team, thrives on variety and is committed to delivering excellent patient and client care.
The clinical experience
This is far from a typical OOH role.
As part of an advanced hospital environment, you’ll have the opportunity to manage a varied and challenging caseload, with support and training available to develop advanced emergency skills.
The night team regularly manages cases including:
Caesarean sections
Pyometra
Exploratory laparotomy
Enterotomy and enterectomy
Addisonian crises
Diabetic ketoacidosis
Severe pancreatitis
There are also opportunities to develop skills including:
Oesophageal tube placement
Seldinger chest drains
Abdominal peritoneal drains
Pigtail urinary catheters
AFAST and TFAST
Endoscopy
Negative pressure wound therapy
Urinary catheterisation

You’ll be working within a modern, purpose-built 24-hour hospital and emergency service with excellent equipment, including:
In-house laboratory
Digital X-ray
Ultrasound
ECG
Advanced dental equipment and dental X-ray
Orthopaedic surgical equipment
Endoscopy
Tonopen
CT scanner
Laparoscopy equipment
You’ll also have access to daytime colleagues with certificate-level expertise in surgery, medicine, endosurgery and dentistry, providing additional support when complex cases arise.
The night team
You won’t be working alone.
A typical night team includes:
Veterinary Surgeon
Senior RVN
2 Veterinary Care Assistants
Reception support
Additional twilight RVN support is available into the evening, providing further assistance during the busiest part of the night.
